Cut their compensation – Letter to The Beach Reporter by Michael D. Robbins

Hermosa Beach need not and should not contract with L.A. County for fire and police services. Ninety percent of El Segundo voters rejected Measure P, the fire union initiative to force El Segundo to contract with L.A. County for fire/paramedic services.

The real problem is wildly excessive and unsustainable firefighter and police total compensation (salaries, benefits, and pensions). That is the greatest cause of the city’s financial problems. … Continue reading

Vents about Public Employee Unions – Letter to the El Segundo Herald by Kip Haggerty

Vents about Public Employee Unions

I would like to congratulate the citizens of El Segundo on their stinging electoral rebuke to the public employee unions. To vote Carl Jacobson back in with the most votes after the vicious attack perpetrated upon him and then for the Council to elect him mayor speaks volumes. The shellacking that Measure P took is indicative of the mood that many shared, that the lies the Fire Department pollsters told in their early push poll were irrelevant, only local control mattered.

I saw Marie Fellhauer’s first act was supporting Bill Fisher for Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem. This reminded me of Don Brann’s support for Eric Busch because it was “his turn” to be Mayor. She’ll be a one termer too. While I appreciate that Marie and Don have given up their time to serve, the mindset a public employee brings to the Council is inconsistent with fiscal responsibility and their natural tendency is to represent public employee unions instead of the citizens.

I hope that the public employee unions have learned their lesson. You can’t shake down your neighbors for excessive pay and benefits in a down economy. The money simply isn’t there. I also hope they will listen to Dave Atkinson on pension reform ideas because the same sad fate may befall them as many private sector union members. When their companies went bankrupt, they got only a fraction of their pension … Continue reading

Ted Lieu’s campaign mailer featured 36 deceptive government employee union endorsements and 38 counterfeit badges

El Segundo voters received a campaign mailer for Ted Lieu, a soft-on-crime, tax-and-spend leftist politician running for state senate in the extremely gerrymandered California Senate District 28 (CA SD 28). The campaign mailer featured 36 deceptive government employee union endorsements made to look like legitimate public safety endorsements, and 38 counterfeit badges which are actually government employee union logos.

Soft-on-crime, tax-and-spend politicians frequently use the cover of deceptive government employee union endorsements to masquerade as tough-on-crime, fiscally conservative politicians.

Union bosses and well-funded outside special interests tried again in 2008 to take over small town El Segundo

2008 EL SEGUNDO CITY ELECTION

Union bosses and well-funded outside special interests tried again in 2008 to take over small town El Segundo

Former City Councilmember Mike Robbins fought against a big city-style political machine in small town El Segundo

“El Segundo Fire and Police Union bosses unilaterally endorsed candidates with the worst public safety, spending, and integrity records.”

Candidates were supported with tens of thousands of dollars from outside special interests, including developers, a trash hauler, someone who tried to obtain a large city contract without competition, and others who may have expected something in return. One of these candidates was Eric Busch. … Continue reading

What is a Fire or Police Union Endorsement Really Worth? by Michael D. Robbins

What is a Fire or Police Union Endorsement Really Worth ?

El Segundo Fire and Police Union bosses have unilaterally endorsed candidates:

  • With the Worst public safety and spending records.

In the last City Council election (2004), the El Segundo Fire and Police Union
    Bosses
endorsed the candidates with the worst public safety records and failed to
endorse the two candidates with outstanding public safety records – Jim
Boulgarides, a firefighter and paramedic in another city and also an L.A. County
Lifeguard – and former multi-term Mayor Carl Jacobson, who was instrumental in
the successful relocation into El Segundo and modernization of our 911 emergency
call/dispatch center and our public safety records management system.

The Union bosses endorsed George Nakano for our State Assembly district in
2002, even though Nakano voted only three days after the 9-11 Terrorist Attack
to give official California driver licenses to Illegal Aliens, Identity Thieves, Drug
Smugglers, and Terrorists using the identity of their choice (AB 60, 9/14/2001).
Nakano voted for dangerous laws and bloated budgets that led to the Governor
    Davis recall.
