Neil Snow is the epitome of naivete that unions love in their members.

He knows nothing about the payoff and kickbacks (called contributions) made by unions to the politicians who gave them these ridiculous contracts.

Union integrity? Unions can and do recruit aliens, both legal and illegal, as members? S.E.I.U. ring any bells?

So much for the English-speaking Americans workers the unions claim to protect.

The billions of taxpayer dollars to “save” GM? Stockholder shares became worthless, yet 40 percent went to protect the union pensions.

In his letter to the editor in last week’s paper, he “parrots” from union manuals every propaganda terminology and definition. He writes, “‘scabs’ . . . is an euphemism for someone who cannot get a job on their own merit.”

He writes, “Employees who would accept lower wages, no bargaining rights and no job security do an inferior job. Lateness, no show, stealing.”

“Now just imagine those types of employees who would agree to those terms. And now imagine they are firefighters and police,” writes Snow.

Tell that to the non-union waitress at the Kettle restaurant in Manhattan Beach, or the non-union Federal Express Drivers, secretaries, auto mechanics, every person in the U.S. military, the 80 percent (280 million) of Americans in this country who are non-union. As Ronald Reagan said, “facts are stubborn things.” Unlike the extremist rants against me, which now include calls for censorship and threats of death by withholding emergency services, I just deal with the facts in order to prevent my city’s bankruptcy and loss of vital services. The people attacking me resort to these sorts of threats because they have no facts on their side. My information comes from official sources as documented at PublicSafetyProject.org.

If Measure P succeeds in liquidating the El Segundo Fire Department, then all other South Bay Cities will suffer reduced mutual aid emergency services. I wish to applaud and express support for frequent letter writer Michael D. Robbins of El Segundo. Mr. Robbins is exactly correct in his comments regarding the firefighter/police unions and the fantastic compensation packages they have been able to carve out of various ill-advised city councils in the beach cities over several years. Let it also be clear that I applaud the skill and dedication of most of the firefighter and police professionals. Union provisions need to be changed

A present provision in the Memorandum of Understanding between the city of Manhattan Beach and the Manhattan Beach Police Officers Association requires mutual agreement on changes in the city’s Employee/Employer Relations Resolution.

In effect, the city is unable, without agreement from POA, to meet its legal responsibilities mandated by state law regarding the determination of legislative and managerial policies. These policies include determining the composition of bargaining units; selection of organizations to represent employees; use of city resources by employee unions; exclusion of high-level managers and confidential employees as union members; and procedures for resolving impasses.

In essence, the POA could dissipate managerial authority by legislating a larger number of smaller bargaining units, creating administrative nightmares, multiple time-consuming negotiations, encouraging end runs to influence elected officials, and union gamesmanship to achieve the highest settlement agreements.

In addition, it creates the specter of managers as union members negotiating agreements across the table with their union employees and fostering divisiveness and competition among managers for scarce resources. Furthermore, the POA is placed to promote processes that remove managerial discretion in the resolution of contract disputes.

These are among the realities that have weakened management authority in the public sector making it the leading cause of the inordinate increases in public employee wages, pension and retirement benefits. … Continue reading →

Cut administration costs

ESUSD can costs of the administration. The superintendent is paid a gasoline stipend and car allotment that should be cut; it amounts to more than $10,000 annually. The superintendent should also take a 10-percent to 15-percent pay cut as the top administrator, showing leadership by example. The other administrators (superintendent’s staff) should take a 10-percent cut across the board. The ESUSD administrators have sat idle and quiet in dealing with the economy, taking pay increases and using reclassifications to mask past pay increases. They also want to take the same percentage cut that teachers may have to take.

Asking the teachers who make between $30,000 and $70,000 annually to take the same percentage pay cut as a person making more than $150,000 annually is grossly unfair and demonstrates poor leadership. The ESUSD should implement graduated pay cuts, like the University of California system did in 2009. The example of cuts could be like 2 percent for those earning less than $50,000, 3 percent for $60,000, 4 percent for $75,000, 5 percent at $90,000, 6 percent at $110,000, 8 percent for $125,000, 10 percent for $150,000 and above, 15 percent for $190,000 and above. … Continue reading →
